In Fall 2024, I was photographing a university event featuring Ruby Bridges. At first, I didn’t know who she was, but as I listened, I realized I was capturing a moment with a living legend.
Ruby Bridges was the first Black girl to attend an all-white school—an event that marked the beginning of the end for segregation in U.S. education. Learning that this happened only 71 years ago truly shocked me.
When Ruby first walked to school, she had to be escorted by U.S. Marshals for her safety. That image — needing protection just to learn —stayed with me the most.
I wanted to capture that feeling in my AR project, turning the idea of “protection to learn” into a visual experience.
In the animation, a young Ruby is surrounded by many Marshals — an exaggerated number meant to emphasize the absurdity and power of that moment in history.
